Firmament

Your world, in a different light.

Sun on the coast. Clear water below your feet. A village worth coming home to after dark. Firmament gives familiar Minecraft places a warmer atmosphere, using the textures you already have.

Island at sunset: Minecraft without shaders on the left, Firmament on the right

Shaders off on the left. Firmament on the right, in every comparison below.

Colours stay rich without turning neon, and daylight keeps its contrast. The sky is a deep blue with warm twilight bands, sunlit clouds have white tops, and the water is clear enough to see the sand below.

Island in a warm ocean: shaders off on the left, Firmament on the right

On calm mornings, a low mist settles in the valleys and over the water, then clears as the sun climbs.

Morning mist: shaders off on the left, Firmament on the right

Stay Out Past Sunset

Nights stay dark and calm. Torches and lanterns glow from gold to amber, moonlight follows the moon's phases, and stars twinkle overhead. On clear nights, the Milky Way crosses the sky.

Milky Way over a cherry grove: shaders off on the left, Firmament on the right

Further From Home

The Nether is deep and shadowy, and its lava lakes keep their orange glow. The End island has shape under a violet sky. Each dimension keeps its own character.

Obsidian pillars of the End: shaders off on the left, Firmament on the right

Make Yourself Comfortable

Start with High. Balanced lowers the cost; Ultra raises the quality. The Color screen tunes contrast, saturation, vibrance and white balance. Eye adaptation, vignette, sharpening, morning mist and the Milky Way can each be adjusted or switched off. The settings are available in English and Russian.

Getting Started

  1. Install Iris and Sodium builds matching your Minecraft version.
  2. Drop the Firmament ZIP into shaderpacks. Keep it zipped.
  3. Open Video Settings → Shader Packs, select Firmament, and choose High.

This is a client shader; your server doesn't need it. For Minecraft 26.2 and 26.3, use the OpenGL renderer.

Before You Play

Gameplay-tested on Java 1.21.1 / NeoForge 21.1.228 / Iris 1.8.12 / Sodium 0.6.13. The extra Minecraft targets in the download files have automated checks; their game tests, and Fabric game tests, are still pending.

Reflections only see what the camera sees. Waterlogged blocks and overlapping transparent surfaces can show artifacts; underwater reflections are disabled to keep the view clear. After reloading chunks with F3+A, shadows of blocks outside your view appear once you look at them. OptiFine, ray tracing, PBR, Distant Horizons and Voxy integration are not included.

Screenshots: real Minecraft 1.21.1 frames of Firmament 0.3 on the High preset, saved by the game itself. No generated images or colour grading. Clouds, waves and mobs can move between the two halves of a comparison.

By PozziTiv4ik, with editable GLSL included in the ZIP. This shader pack is unrelated to the Hypixel mod named Firmament.

# Firmament 0.3

  • Richer colour, calmer light.** Firmament no longer looks as if the brightness
were turned all the way up: colours stay saturated, daylight has contrast, and
nights, caves, the Nether and the End keep their mood.

  • New tone curve:** a hue-preserving filmic curve keeps mid-grey where it
belongs. Sunlit sand and blossoms keep their colour instead of fading to
white; only real highlights such as the sun roll off to white.
  • Juicier colour, not neon:** vibrance lifts sky, sand, blossoms and grass,
while snow stays white and already vivid colours stay natural.
  • Eye adaptation:** centre-weighted metering, and dark scenes are no longer
lifted to daylight brightness. Bloom only comes from truly bright light.
  • Sky:** a deep blue sky with a blue horizon, warm twilight bands, a sun halo,
moon phases, twinkling stars and an optional Milky Way.
  • Morning mist:** low fog in valleys and over water at sunrise (optional).
  • Clouds:** white sunlit tops over grey bases.
  • Light:** torches and lanterns fall off naturally from golden to amber, and
lava stays orange.
  • Nether and End:** relit. The Nether is dark and deep instead of a glowing red
wall; the End island has shape instead of a flat white surface.
  • Rain** falls as grey streaks.
  • New settings:** Eye adaptation, Contrast, Vibrance, White balance, Vignette,
Sharpening, Morning mist and Milky Way, in English and Russian.

The same 29 Minecraft Java versions as 0.22: **1.18.2**; **1.19, 1.19.1,
1.19.2 and 1.19.4**; **1.20–1.20.6**; **1.21–1.21.11**; **26.1, 26.1.1,
26.1.2, 26.2 and 26.3**. The new gallery was rendered in Minecraft
  • 1.21.1 / NeoForge 21.1.228 / Iris 1.8.12 / Sodium 0.6.13** on the High preset.

Known: after reloading chunks with F3+A, shadows of blocks outside your view
appear once you look at them. Iris only builds chunks the camera sees.

Use the Iris and Sodium builds matching your Minecraft version; 26.2 and 26.3
target the OpenGL renderer. Keep the ZIP intact, place it in shaderpacks, and
select Firmament in Iris. Start with High and adjust the preset for your setup.

  • Faster clouds in rain and tidier shader code, with exactly the same picture.**

  • Clouds in rain:** about 1.05× faster. Cloud samples that are already fully
dense skip noise that cannot change them; higher Cloud Coverage settings
benefit too.
  • Under the hood:** repeated shader code now uses shared helpers, the
reflection-snapshot pass decodes each pixel once, and unused declarations
are gone.
  • Same image:** every automated comparison image is bit-identical to 0.21.
  • Nothing slower:** every other pass costs the same as in 0.21. Four
further optimization ideas were measured and left out because they were not
faster.

Timings are isolated GPU pass measurements against 0.21 on an RTX 4060 Laptop
GPU at 2560 × 1440 with the High preset, not frame rates. The sky, fog and
night-sky speed-ups of 0.21 are kept.

Rendering, presets, options and the 29 supported Minecraft Java versions are
unchanged from 0.21: **1.18.2**; **1.19, 1.19.1, 1.19.2 and 1.19.4**;
  • 1.20–1.20.6**; **1.21–1.21.11**; **26.1, 26.1.1, 26.1.2, 26.2 and 26.3**.
Automated OpenGL comparisons match 0.21 exactly.

  • A cleaner shader core and a faster sky, with the same look.**

  • Sky:** the atmosphere pass computes the sun and moon once per frame instead
of once per pixel and is about 1.3× faster by day and night.
  • Fog and light shafts:** 1.06–1.17× faster above and below water.
  • Night sky:** stars and clouds over open sky about 1.06× faster; ambient
occlusion reconstruction about 1.03×.
  • Under the hood:** shared shader code is reorganized, with named materials
and one implementation of each lighting helper. Every other pass costs the
same as in 0.2.

The figures are isolated GPU pass timings measured against 0.2 on an RTX 4060
Laptop GPU at 2560 × 1440 with the High preset, not frame rates. In-game FPS
depends on the scene, render distance and hardware.

Rendering, presets, options and the 29 supported Minecraft Java versions are

Automated OpenGL comparisons match 0.2 within the project's equivalence limits.

  • Performance release: more frames, the same look.**

  • Nether and End:** the unused sun shadow map is no longer rendered at all.
  • Overworld shadows:** a depth-only shadow pass; water and clear glass no
longer reach the shadow rasterizer.
  • Cloud shadows:** read from a small map computed once per frame instead of
several noise octaves per lit pixel. Sunlit surface lighting costs less than
half as much as in 0.11.
  • Fog and light shafts:** cheaper shadow lookups along each ray (about 1.2×).
  • Sky:** clouds and stars are rendered after the terrain. Stars are drawn only
where the sky is visible; in caves and sealed rooms, clouds hidden by terrain
cost much less (about 2.4× for a cave view with a strip of sky).
  • Ambient occlusion:** open, unoccluded areas skip the reconstruction filter.

The figures are isolated GPU pass timings measured against 0.11 on an RTX 4060
Laptop GPU at 2560 × 1440 with the High preset, not frame rates. In-game FPS

  • Expanded Minecraft compatibility: one ZIP for 29 Java Edition versions.**

  • Compatibility targets now include **1.18.2**; **1.19, 1.19.1, 1.19.2 and 1.19.4**;
  • 1.20–1.20.6**; **1.21–1.21.11**; **26.1, 26.1.1, 26.1.2, 26.2 and 26.3**.
  • Automatic material selection handles older grass names and newer leaves,
flowers, bushes and copper lights. No separate shader ZIP is needed per version.
  • Existing lighting, clear underwater surfaces, all three dimensions and
Balanced / High / Ultra presets are preserved.

Use the Iris and Sodium builds matching your Minecraft version. Minecraft
26.2 and 26.3 target the OpenGL renderer. Versions outside the list are not included.

The adaptation passed automated source, material and OpenGL checks. Recorded
gameplay evidence remains **1.21.1 / NeoForge 21.1.228 / Iris 1.8.12 / Sodium 0.6.13**,
captured with 0.10-alpha.2 and the same GLSL. Additional Minecraft/Iris combinations
still await in-game validation; the new version list is not a claim of 29 game tests.

Keep the ZIP intact, place it in shaderpacks, and select Firmament in Iris.
Start with High and adjust the preset for your setup.

Natural lighting, clear water and a new atmosphere for all three dimensions.

  • Soft shadows, volumetric clouds, atmospheric fog and shafts of light.
  • Reflective water above the surface, with a clear view from underwater.
  • Smoother water reflections without the earlier nighttime star streaks.
  • Warm block lighting, moving foliage, wet surfaces, bloom and automatic exposure.
  • Balanced, High and Ultra presets, with English and Russian settings.

Tested in Minecraft Java **1.21.1** with **NeoForge 21.1.228**, **Iris 1.8.12**
and **Sodium 0.6.13**. The author captured the gallery with High in the Overworld,
Nether and End. Other game versions and renderer combinations remain untested.

Keep the ZIP intact, place it in shaderpacks, and select Firmament in Iris.
Start with High and adjust the preset for your setup.
