Sound Controller

GitHub license GitHub release GitHub issues

We've all dealt with that loud portal before, or those ridiculously loud mob farms. Perhaps you're even listening out for a particular mob while caving. Have you ever wanted to just fine-tune those specific sounds without being limited by the category sliders?

Sound Controller is a client-side Minecraft mod providing complete volume control over the sounds played in the game. It adds an extra set of options to your sound settings, providing you with per-sound volume sliders, custom regions, and presets!

This mod is available on GitHub and Modrinth. Support for CurseForge has been dropped, but very early Fabric versions can still be found there.

Features

  • Sliders for every sound in the game, including those added by mods. Allows setting volumes between 0% to 200%.
  • Preview and reset buttons accompanying the volume sliders.
  • Search to quickly find the sound you're looking for.
  • Filter to your modified volumes, so you can easily find the sounds you've changed.
  • Identify noises nearby by replacing the vanilla subtitles with sound IDs (toggleable).
  • Regions, so that not all of your volume changes need to be global!
  • Presets that can be applied on top of all your volume configurations. Mute the chickens once, and then apply to all your chicken farms!
  • Mod and datapack support - your sounds should all be available!

A note on configs \ Global volumes and presets are shared across all servers. Regions are stored and loaded per-server

The mod injects an 'Individual Sounds' button into the default sound options screen for quick and easy access. Alternatively, it can be accessed via ModMenu or NeoForge's mods list.

The vanilla sound options screen, with the new 'Individual Sounds' button placed to the left of the Done button.

The global tab is where you can set the volumes for all sounds in the game no matter where you are or which server you are on, for a consistent playing experience.

The global volumes tab, with a searchbar and a list of modified volume sliders.

The presets tab displays all of the preset configurations that can be applied on top of your global or regional volume lists. Note that this doesn't replace the list, so you can apply multiple presets at once!

The presets tab, showing a list of presets the user has created.

In the region screen, you can pick from two types of geometry. The box region is defined by two diagonally opposing coordinates. The spherical region is defined by a single point and a distance from that point.

Updated to MC 26.3!

A couple of small changes:
  • Region-controlled sounds are now based off the sound source, not the player location. So you can silence literally only the blocks of your portal, farm, etc, rather than a large radius around the annoying volume source.
  • Suppress registration of muted sounds into the sound engine (see #40) so they stop contributing to the sound cap

Backporting the latest 1.4.0 changes to 1.21.1, such that Neoforge is being supported (by request on GitHub).

Note that I am *not* uploading the backported Fabric JAR here, to avoid feature loss between 1.21.2 - 26.1. It is available in GitHub for those who wish to use it, however note that it is unlikely that I will backport features for the in-between versions unless there is adequate interest in the NeoForge versions (in which case Fabric adds little extra work).
It's the Regions and Presets release!

In a huge update, Sound Controller will now support regions (for controlling volume within set areas) and presets (for saving sets of volume changes that can be applied later).

Enjoy the new features!!

Welcome NeoForge users!

SoundController has now been split into a multi-loader system, supporting both fabric and NeoForge. We're starting updates at MC 26.2 - it is unlikely that I will be backporting to older versions at this stage.
And it's about time too! This release is a continuation of the previous (in so-far as it's for Minecraft 26.2), now with multiloader support for both Fabric and NeoForged!

If you have already downloaded the previous fabric jar for Minecraft 26.2, there is no need to update.
Updated to MC 26.2!

Changes:
  • Fixed "Done" button missing on some UI pages, due to a mixin exiting early

A huge thanks to @CoolAid48 and @Maganoos for putting together most of the work for this update.
Updated for Minecraft 26+!

A huge thanks to @CoolAid48 for putting this update together, and to @Maganoos for providing updates throughout the snapshot period.

  • Changes**

No user-facing changes have been implemented, however the mod has been transferred across to use the new minecraft mod bindings.

Minecraft also requires that Java 25 be used for MC26+.
Updated for 1.21.11 with a few changes!

  • Support Refresh**
Volumes will be reloaded when resource packs get refreshed (F3-T).

This is useful not just for when you add new resource packs, but also when you modify your config file directly. Previously this would require a restart, however now you can simply reload your resource packs.

  • Stop Playback**
The config allows for testing your audio volumes, but the playback always played the full sound. This was annoying for long-running sounds (e.g. music). You can now press the button a second time to stop the sound. [#21](https://github.com/BVengo/sound-controller/issues/21)

Unfortunately, the ability to raise volumes over 100% will be removed again in a later update after discovering that it did not, and *can not* work as intended. See [#34](https://github.com/BVengo/sound-controller/issues/34) for more details about this.

Instead, it will be replaced with a button allowing you to ignore the category volume, per sound.
Updated to 1.21.9 and 1.21.10!

No user-facing changes.
Updated to MC 1.21.6!

Also included a backported bugfix, bumping us to v1.2.3

Bug fixes! It is recommended that you update if you want to avoid lag spikes.

Shoutout to MoneyManCorp in discord for doing testing for me, so we could get this out quickly.

  • Bugfixes and Technical Changes**
  • _Bugfix_: Subtitles button was previously broken (incorrect behaviour). Has now been fixed.
  • _Bugfix_: Subtitles are no longer on by default
  • _Bugfix_: Rewritten subtitles to avoid encountering lag spikes
  • Storing sounds in HashMap instead of TreeMap. Extracting volumes is now O(n) instead of O(logn), at the expense of requiring sorting when displaying in the configs screen
  • Using WrapOperation mixins for better compatibility with other mods

## v1.2.0 - 1.21.4
Updated to 1.21.4! This version brings a few new important features and bugfixes.

  • Features**
  • Sliders now go to 200%. You can _increase_ sound volumes! (Resolves #17)
  • Added reset buttons, so you don't need to manually set sliders back to 100%
  • Trigger buttons (play sound, reset volume) can now be cancelled by releasing your mouse click outside the button area

  • Bug fixes**
  • Fixed the UI on buttons, so it renders properly when pressing or releasing
  • The search bar and filter are reset when the page is closed
Updated mappings for latest MC code. No user-facing changes.
Updated to 1.21!

Other than that, no changes to be seen.
Updated for 1.20.1 pre-release 4!

No new features in this update, just keeping compatibility with the latest Minecraft version.

  • Technical changes**
  • Changes to the RawSubtitlesHud after SoundEntries were made private
  • Using the new Identifier.of methods
