Tellus: Real Earth Survival

Build on Preikestolen. Sail the actual North Sea. Walk the Sahara. Set up a logging camp in the boreal forests of British Columbia. Get hypothermia in Patagonia and sunstroke in Death Valley.

This is a real-Earth survival modpack. The overworld is Tellus — a worldgen mod that replaces vanilla terrain with real elevation, real coastlines, and real biomes drawn from actual geographic data. There's only one Earth, but it has a lot of corners worth exploring.

The world

  • Tellus generates the entire overworld from real-world topology. Every coastline, fjord, mountain range, river, desert, and forest is in roughly the place you'd find it on a map.
  • Distant Horizons 3.0 with Iris and the Solas Shader are preconfigured to render that scale beautifully — see real mountains from real distances.
  • The world is vast. The pack is built for long-form survival, multiplayer expedition play, and base-building in places that look like real places.

The tech

A full Create-centric tech tree, paired with Immersive Engineering and The Factory Must Grow for heavy industry.

  • Create 6.0 + Create Aeronautics for the airships
  • 14 Create addons including TFMG (oil, refining, heavy industry), Big Cannons, Crafts & Additions, New Age, Ironworks, Connected, Encased, Garnished, Power Grid, Power Loader, Copper & Zinc, Dragons Plus, Dreams & Desires, and Enchantment Industry
  • Immersive Engineering for high-voltage transmission, multiblock refining, and proper industrial scale alongside Create's elegance
  • Farmer's Delight for cooking, crops, and food variety

Survival realism

The pack is tuned for survival realism. You will need to manage:

  • Temperature (Tough As Nails) — hypothermia in cold biomes, heatstroke in hot ones, gear and shelter matter
  • Thirst (Thirst Was Taken) — hydration as a real resource; rivers and rain matter
  • Seasons (Serene Seasons) — yearly cycle with biome shifts
  • Diet variety (Spice of Life: Onion) — eating the same thing every day stops being enough

The wildlife is real wildlife: Naturalist populates each biome with species from that part of the world — bears, lions, alligators, deer, foxes — and Better Combat gives melee enough depth that a brown bear is genuinely a problem.

The market

The pack ships with a custom Market Stalls mod — placeable trading blocks with a four-currency system (emeralds, diamonds, oak logs, spruce logs). They exist as a deliberate fallback for the geographic realism problem: when you spawn in Iceland, you don't have easy access to jungle wood; when you spawn in Indonesia, you don't have easy access to spruce. The market stalls bridge those gaps without breaking the survival economy — premium items are emerald-only, common items can be paid for with whatever you have.

Multiplayer-ready

  • Open Parties And Claims — chunk claims and a party system
  • Xaero's Minimap + World Map — full integration with claim overlays so you can see your party's territory at a glance
  • Sophisticated Storage + Sophisticated Backpacks + Carry On for inventory and base logistics
  • Chat Heads, No Chat Reports, Better Advancements, Inventory Profiles Next — the standard server quality-of-life set

Sound and decoration

  • Sound Physics Remastered — spatial audio with proper occlusion and reverb. Caves sound like caves. Forests sound like forests.
  • Ambient Sounds — biome-aware nature sounds layered over everything
  • Supplementaries, Chipped, Macaw's suite, Dramatic Doors for build variety and decoration

Performance baseline

  • Sodium + Sodium Extra + EntityCulling + ModernFix — the modern performance stack
  • EMI + JEI + JER + Jade for recipe and information tooling

Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.21.1
  • NeoForge 21.1.228+
  • Java 21
  • RAM: 12 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended

Real-world chunk generation, Distant Horizons render distance, and the Sodium ecosystem all want headroom. Don't allocate less.

Server play

This pack is designed with multiplayer in mind. We strongly recommend pre-generating chunks around your intended spawn area before opening to players — Tellus fetches elevation tiles on demand, so first-time chunk loads are bandwidth-bound. Pre-gen once, smooth gameplay forever.

v0.11.0 — Real Earth at 1:1, real alpine snow, real climate
A pretty significant release. The whole vertical-scale story has been retuned and the pack now ships with a coherent altitude-driven climate model. New seasonal HUD, new decoration mod set, ship-ready dedicated-server pack with correct defaults.

Lauterbrunnen at 1:1 (or close to it)
The default world preset is now Lauterbrunnen Valley, Switzerland at horizontal scale 1:1 (1 block = 1 metre). Vertical is compressed to 0.85 to fit Alpine summits (Eiger 3967 m, Mönch 4107 m, Jungfrau 4158 m) inside Minecraft's mandatory dimension ceiling. New world layout:

What Y
Bedrock -2032
Sea level -1532
Valley floor ~-850
Treeline ~340
Bernese summits ~1840–2002
Build ceiling 2031
Below sea level is dramatically compressed (oceanic_height_scale=0.05) so the 500-block below-sea budget covers any real ocean depth on Earth.

Snow that's actually correct
Snow now generates at chunkgen time via vanilla's freeze_top_layer feature running against Tellus's biome assignment. That means:

Alpine peaks are snowy from the moment they're generated — no waiting for a runtime placer, no per-player radius effect
Distant Horizons captures correct snow in its LOD bake from chunk #1 — far peaks look snowy whether or not anyone has visited them
No jarring snow circle following the player around in winter — Serene Seasons' radius-based snow placement is disabled (generate_snow_ice=false)
Static climate: snowy biomes stay snowy, temperate valleys stay temperate. Serene Seasons still cycles biome temperature (foliage colours, crop growth, animal behaviour), but the visible snow line is altitude-driven from Tellus's biome data, not seasonally moving
This required a Tellus update — Tellus v0.1.2 ships in this pack.

New mod: Tellus Alpine Climate v0.1.0
A small companion mod that:

Altitude-aware Tough As Nails temperature. Climb above the treeline (y~338) and TAN's cold meter starts ticking down; one step colder per ~340 blocks of altitude. Cold damage scales naturally with elevation.
Cute non-obtrusive HUD. Small dark pill in the top-right corner shows the current season (with a coloured glyph: ✿ ☀ ♥ ❄) and your TAN temperature level. Hides during F1 / menus. Corner is configurable.
Season-clock commands. /alpineclimate info, /alpineclimate season set <1..12>, /alpineclimate season advance <N> for testing seasonal behaviour without waiting real-world hours.
Macaw's series — full set
Pack now includes all 11 Macaw's mods available for NeoForge 1.21.1:

Bridges, Doors, Roofs, Trapdoors (already shipped)
Fences & Walls, Furniture, Windows, Paths & Pavings, Paintings, Lights & Lamps, Holidays (new in this release)
Combined with Chipped (~1500 variants), Supplementaries, and Dramatic Doors, the pack now offers ~5000+ unique decorative blocks for building.

Server pack
The bundled dedicated-server zip is now genuinely turnkey: pre-baked dimension type at -2032 / 4064, world preset auto-set to Lauterbrunnen, level-type=tellus:earth pinned in server.properties so the integrated server actually picks up Tellus's preset on first boot, Chunky included for pre-generation. Unzip → install-server.bat → flip eula → run.bat.

Modded ore generation
Modded ores (TFMG, Create, Create Ironworks, Create New Age) used absolute Y placements designed for vanilla bedrock (-64). At our shifted dimension they would have spawned in the SKY at y~-64. v0.11.0 ships override data that translates every absolute Y placement to land near our new bedrock (-2032), so ores generate where you'd expect to find them by mining downward.

Removed / disabled
Distant Horizons direct-LOD snow writes — was planned, scoped down in favour of letting Tellus + vanilla biome rules own snow. Snow is now baked into chunks at gen time, which DH naturally captures.
Serene Seasons radius snow generation — disabled to avoid the visually jarring snow-circle-around-player effect. SS still drives biome temperature, foliage colour, and crop growth.
Compatibility
Existing worlds will not benefit fully. Most of the changes apply at chunkgen time. New chunks in existing worlds get the new behaviour; existing chunks keep their old state. To see the full pack, start a new world.
Servers should pre-generate with Chunky after first boot — Tellus fetches real-Earth tiles on demand, so first-time chunk loads are bandwidth-bound.

# v0.10.2

## Hotfix

  • Tellus updated to v0.1.1** — drops the bundled org.tukaani:xz library
that conflicted with Distant Horizons' inlined copy. v0.10.1 failed to
launch on the Modrinth client launcher with a JPMS module-resolution
error; this release fixes it. DH's xz copy serves both at runtime.

## Added

  • Chunky** (server-side only) — pre-generation tool. Run /chunky start
on a dedicated server to pre-warm chunks around spawn before opening to
players. Particularly useful for this pack since Tellus fetches real-world
elevation tiles on demand and 1:1-scale worlds need many more chunks for
the same area.

## No content changes

All 92 mods from v0.10.1 are still included with the same versions. World
saves are unaffected; servers running v0.10.1 will still hand-shake cleanly
with v0.10.2 clients (Tellus reports the same tellus 1.0.0 mod id and
version).
v0.10.1 — First public release
The first public version of the pack. Built and tested over a multi-month dev cycle on NeoForge 1.21.1; everything below has been smoke-tested in survival play sessions. Expect rough edges typical of a new pack — please file issues with logs if you hit anything unusual.

What this pack is
A real-Earth survival pack built on Tellus (real terrain, real biomes, real coastlines) with a Create-centric tech tree and a deliberate survival realism layer.

Headline features
Tellus generates the overworld from real elevation and biome data — go build a base on Preikestolen, sail the actual North Sea, walk the Sahara.
Create 6.0 + Create Aeronautics + 14 Create addons including TFMG, Big Cannons, Crafts & Additions, New Age, Ironworks, Connected, Encased, Garnished, Power Grid, Power Loader, Copper & Zinc, Dragons Plus, Dreams & Desires, and Enchantment Industry.
Distant Horizons 3.0 + Iris + Solas Shader preconfigured — view the real-Earth terrain at the scale it deserves.
Custom Market Stalls mod — placeable trading blocks with a 4-currency trade system (emeralds, diamonds, oak logs, spruce logs). Designed as a fallback for biome-locked items in a real-world map where some resources are geographically scarce.
Survival realism layer
Serene Seasons — yearly cycle with biome temperature shifts
Tough As Nails — temperature, hypothermia, heatstroke
Thirst Was Taken — hydration meter
Naturalist — bears, lions, alligators, deer, foxes, and more populating real biomes
Better Combat — melee depth so wildlife is actually dangerous
Spice of Life: Onion — diet variety bonuses
Multiplayer & QoL
Open Parties And Claims — chunk claims + party system
Xaero's Minimap + World Map — full integration with OPAC claim overlays
Chat Heads, No Chat Reports, Inventory Profiles Next, Better Advancements

Sound & decoration
Sound Physics Remastered — spatial audio with occlusion and reverb
Ambient Sounds — biome-aware nature sounds
Supplementaries, Chipped, Macaw's Bridges/Doors/Roofs/Trapdoors, Dramatic Doors
Other notable inclusions
Immersive Engineering 12.4 — heavy industry alongside Create
Farmer's Delight — cooking and crops
Sodium + Sodium Extra + EntityCulling + ModernFix — performance baseline
Comforts, Corpse, Clumps, Polymorph, OK Zoomer, and the rest of the standard 1.21.1 QoL set
Requirements
Minecraft 1.21.1
NeoForge 21.1.228+
Java 21
RAM 12 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended (real-Earth chunk generation + Distant Horizons + Sodium ecosystem all want headroom)
Known limitations
Tellus's NeoForge port (v0.1.0) is alpha software — first-load chunk generation is bandwidth-bound on its tile-fetch backend. Server admins should pre-generate around spawn.
Cold Sweat 2.4 is not in this pack — it is currently incompatible with Tellus on NeoForge 1.21.1 due to a tag-binding lifecycle ordering bug in Cold Sweat that runs before NeoForge has bound tags. Tough As Nails covers the same survival ground.
FTB Chunks/Library/Teams are CurseForge-exclusive on 1.21.1, so the pack uses Open Parties And Claims instead.
