## [1.7.3]
A major lock-picking rebalance replacing random pick breakage with a predictable **durability system**.
### Lock Picks Now Use Durability
Lock picks no longer randomly disappear after a bad guess.
Instead, every wrong pin damages the pick, and it only breaks when its durability reaches zero.
Default durability:
* Wood — **32**
* Gold — **40**
* Copper — **48**
* Iron — **96**
* Steel — **192**
* Diamond — **384**
* Netherite — **768**
The durability bar now shows exactly how worn the pick is.
### Stronger Locks Damage Picks More
Each lock tier now has its own **Pick Wear** value:
* Wood — **1**
* Iron — **3**
* Steel — **6**
* Diamond — **12**
* Netherite — **24**
This means stronger locks wear picks down much faster.
A pick used against a lock of roughly the same tier is generally balanced around **32 wrong pins** before breaking.
Near-miss guesses cost less durability than completely wrong guesses.
### Pick Strength Has Been Simplified
**Lockpick Strength no longer affects durability.**
It now only determines whether a pick is strong enough to attempt a lock through the existing Complexity system.
Pick durability is configured separately.
### Enchantments Updated
Lock-picking enchantments have been adjusted for the new system.
* **Sturdy** — increases durability damage caused by wrong guesses.
* **Finesse** — reduces durability damage by **15% per level** by default.
* **Last Catch** — has a chance to completely prevent durability loss from a wrong guess.
* **Shocking** — now triggers on actual pick breakage much less often.
Enable:
`Shocking Triggers On Wrong Pin`
if you prefer Shocking to activate more frequently.
A wrong guess always costs at least **1 durability** unless Last Catch activates.
### Mending & Unbreaking Support
Lock picks now behave like normal Minecraft tools.
* **Mending** works on all pick tiers.
* **Unbreaking** reduces durability loss normally.
* Netherite picks can still be repaired with their material at an anvil.
Pack authors can also define a pick with:
`"durability": 0`
to make it permanently unbreakable.
### Lock Picks No Longer Stack
Damageable lock picks now have a maximum stack size of **1**.
As a result:
* Copper, gold, iron, steel, and diamond pick recipes now craft **1 pick instead of 2**.
* Villager and Wandering Trader trades now give **1 pick instead of 2** for the same price.
* Loot tables are unchanged, but multiple generated picks appear as separate items.
Existing stacks from older saves remain safe, but will reduce to one as Minecraft moves them through inventories.
Unbreakable picks with `durability = 0` can still stack.
### Configuration
Added new customization options.
#### Lock Stats
Each lock can now define:
`pick_wear`
This can be configured through:
* `[Lock Stats]` in `locks-common.toml`
* Lock JSON definitions
* Datapack lock-stat overrides
#### Lock Pick Definitions
Lock pick JSON files now support:
`durability`
Pick durability must be configured in:
`config/locks/lockpick_types/<name>.json`
because durability is determined when the item is registered.
#### Enchantments
Added:
* `Sturdy Wear Per Level`
* `Finesse Wear Reduction Per Level`
* `Near Miss Wear Multiplier`
The old `Finesse Strength Per Level` option is no longer used.
### Third-Party Lock Picks
Items added to the `locks:lock_picks` tag that do not support durability are treated as **unbreakable** instead of being consumed.
### Multiplayer
The network protocol remains at **3**.
1.7.2 and 1.7.3 are technically protocol-compatible, but clients and servers should still be updated together because lock-picking behavior has changed.
### Reliability
* Durability calculations now correctly respect **Unbreaking** and Creative Mode.
* Removed unnecessary NBT writes when reading pick strength, improving stacking behavior for compatible items.
* Added additional automated tests for lock-pick durability and wear calculations.
